Real Killers

Wisconsin drug addicts Gregory Fester and his girlfriend Jessica Reid stumble through Nebraska in a stolen truck during their April 2006 cross-country crime spree. These teen-age goths randomly target the Stocks farmhouse for a late-night burglary. When chaos ensues, Fester and Reid kill the terrified couple, before they're able to dial 911. Fester and Reid nearly got away with the murders, except for their DNA residue on an engraved gold ring and pot pipe. Without the clues, authorities had no way to link them to the crimes and two innocent men could have went to prison in their place. Fester and Reid both pleaded guilty to the murders and each received a life prison sentence with no chance for parole.

Fallen Hero

David Kofoed, then 50, was the most recognized figure in Nebraska's CSI community. He served as director of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office crime lab in Omaha. Kofoed produced a particle of murder victim Wayne Stock's blood from a car that later turned out to be no way involved in the killings. His actions helped keep two innocent men in jail, even after the real killers from Wisconsin were captured. In 2010, a Cass County judge convicted Kofoed of tampering with physical evidence, a felony. Kofoed's conviction brought shame and disgrace to himself and his unit. Today, Kofoed is serving his prison term at the Lincoln Community Corrections Center.
